Solution For Cockatoo Dust

The owner of an Umbrella Cockatoo wrote in for information about an air purifier that could help with the bird dust.  He wrote:

I own an Umbrella Cockatoo. The dust is unbelievable like a snow storm. I've tried different types of air filters and didn't make a dent in the dust. I need a filter system that will keep the dust down and not get clogged every other day. If I can't find a filter my wife is going to have the bird for dinner. Please help and suggest the best filter system for the job.

Even though it’s a funny email, you can hear the frustration about the dust. The Cockatoo Parrot is a powder down bird like Cockatiels and African Greys.  The dust is a natural part of their growth and development and will always be a part of your life with them.  Nothing will completely remove all of the dust, but here is my response to him.

I would recommend the Bird Dust Air Purifier for the white dust your Cockatoo is producing because it is designed for particle removal. It has a 4-filter canister of filters including a HEPA that will remove particles as small as .3 microns. This purifier is especially good for dealing with powder down birds such as Cockatoos, African Greys, and Cockatiels.
We send this unit to aviaries, and although it will not remove 100% of the particles (nothing will),it will remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 that are .3 microns or larger.  And that means it will go a long way towards convincing your wife to have something else for dinner!

Best Bird Room Air Purifier

Birds are probably more susceptible to bad air than humans.  So using an air purifier to keep the air clean is a must.

Their small air passages make it so easy for particles to adhere to the wall of the tubes and eventually cause disease and infection if the air passages don’t become completely closed first.
Not a nice thing to think about.
With that said the cleaner needs to work all the time to keep the air clean. Not only should it be able to clean bird-related particles such as feathers, dander, and dust, but more normal household particles such as dust, dust mites, seasonal pollens, mold and mildew spores, and bacteria and viruses.
And even though the cleaner is for the birds, it will also help their humans stay healthier too.  Constant exposure to such high levels of dander and bird dust can cause sensitivity where there was none before.
This can result in sneezing and congestion when doing daily maintenance.  Left unchecked this could cause respiratory issues that are a nuisance to deal with at best.
The cleaner should also produce only fresh air as a by-product.  It is important to avoid any level of ozone and ionized particles for the birds’ sake and yours.

Cockatoo Parrot Air Filter

Cockatoos are gorgeous parrots and can often live for 40 years or more.  One of the best ways to insure longevity is to provide the cleanest air possible 24 hours every day.

This can be especially challenging with this type of bird.  Not only does it produce the usual dander and feathers but a white wing dust as well.

For those who already own and love a Cockatoo, you know this white dust is relentless and can become overwhelming.
Not only is it unsightly, but it is unhealthy for you and your pet.  It can hang in the air, and once it settles it can be sent airborne again with the slightest movement from you or your bird.
Bird’s air passages are tiny and Cockatoos are no different.  So having to breathe air that is thick with particles can cause health problems for them quickly.  Clogged airways are usually the start of more serious diseases and infections.  Many times the condition can go unnoticed until it is too late to reverse the damage.
Filtering the air with a cleaner that is specifically designed to reduce airborne particles without producing questionable by-products such as ozone or ionized particles is best.  HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filters by definition are designed to remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particles that are .3 microns or larger in size.
The Bird Dust Air Purifier contains a HEPA filter as well as 3 other filters for particles.  The motor in the unit is designed to run 24 hours every day to insure that airborne particles are kept to a minimum.
Let it send 250 cubic feet of fresh, clean air into your home every 60 seconds 24 hours a day starting today.  Send for it now at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html

Managing Parrot Dander

All parrots produce dander so managing it is exactly the right approach to take.  You will never be able to get rid of all of it, but by filtering the air with a cleaner that is designed to remove a wide range of particles, you can drastically reduce the amount in your air.

The reason you need a cleaner that has various sizes of filters is because dander is sticky stuff.  It will often attach to feathers, and other more normal particulates in the air that are bigger.
These bigger particles are very visible and include household dust, feathers, and bird dust.  By having a variety of filters, the particles that are visible are eliminated without having to use a finer grade of filter that is best used to eliminate micron-sized particles.

So what filters should an air cleaner for parrots included?  It should contain 2 pre-filters for large and medium size particulates, a HEPA (high efficiency particle arresting) filter that is designed to eliminate particles as small as .3 microns in size; and a carbon cloth filter that gives dual protection against both gases and particulates.

Many parrots produce mostly dander.  But there are some parrots that produce a white powder that can keep air quality consistently clogged with particles.
Included in this group of birds are the African Grey, Cockatoos, and Cockatiels.  They produce this powder in addition to dander.

The Bird Dust Air Purifier from PurerAir.com has a 4-stage filtration process that is effective in taking out dander, bird dust, and other pollutants that may have dander stuck to them.

Keeping Dust From Birds

If you are worried about how dust affects your pet bird, you’re a good owner.

And you are right to want to keep the amount of dust they breathe to a minimum.

Their air passages are so small that they can easily become clogged.
A bird in captivity is depending on its owner to keep the air clean all the time to prevent particles from becoming lodged in their airways making conditions ripe for disease and infection.
Filtering the air with a high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) air purifier is the most effective and reliable way to insure that particulates remain consistently low.

And whereas bird-related particles are probably at the top of your list, there are also other normal household pollutants that they are exposed to as well.  Things such as dust, dust mites, seasonal pollen, and dander from other pets can also cause problems.
The HEPA filter does not care where or how the irritants get in the air, it is designed to take out all particles that are .3 microns or greater in size with a micron being defined as one millionth of a meter.

Exposing your birds to less dust exposes their owners to less which makes everyone healthier.

Bird Dust Case Study

Jackie called about the dust that her 30 year old Moluccan Cockatoo creates. She reports that when he flies about you can literally see a cloud of dust in the air.

In the rain forest he would get a bath everyday, but she said her schedule does not allow her to do that.

Of course she loves her bird and wants to clean up the air for his sake and her family. She says she had an ozone-producing air purifier, but she heard that they were not safe, and they didn’t really do the job. So she was looking for an effective cleaner.

Cockatoos, Cockatiels, and African Grey Parrots are powder down birds, which mean they produce wing dust above and beyond what is usual for other birds. Breathing air that is thick with these particles day in and day out can cause repiratory problems for birds and humans.

An air cleaner that only produces fresh air is the best solution. And it should have numerous filters that are designed to remove particles that range from visible to microscopic.

Having a range of filters means that not only is the dust removed while it is airborne, but invisible particles such as bird dander, dust mites, and other more normal household pollutants such as mold and mildew spores.

Being able to run the cleaner continuously insures that the amount of particles in the air stays low. This benefits you and your bird by making the air purer, and makes clean up less of a chore.

Nothing will remove all of the dust, but the Bird Dust Air Purifier comes pretty close. See it now at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html

Eliminating Parrots’ White Dust

If you have parrot that produces white dust, you probably have an African Grey, Cockatoo, or Cockatiel. They are all incredibly beautiful and intelligent birds and they are all powder down birds.

You may or may not have realized exactly what that meant when you adopted, but it probably didn’t take long for you to understand more fully exactly what that meant and how much of a daily impact it would have.

This white dust is produced as a natural part of your avian friend’s growth and development and promotes healthy wings. And while you have good reason to be happy your bird is healthy, that doesn’t help much with the constant clean up that is needed to even stay even with the dust.

The most effective way to minimize the dust, and nothing will get rid of it completely, is to eliminate it when it’s in the air. This is a great plan for 2 reasons. First, if you can get it out of the air there is less chance for you and your bird to inhale it.

From a bird’s eye view, continually inhaling air that is thick with particles clogs air passages. Clogged air passages are often the start of illnesses and diseases that are impossible to reverse.

From the human side, constantly inhaling this type of dust can cause the onset of allergies, asthma, and possible nodes in the lungs. Taking it out while it’s airborne reduces the chance of all 3 of those nasties. It also means there is less dust for you to clean off of surfaces. And that’s a good thing.

See the bird dust air purifier that will constantly eliminate bird dust, other normal household particles as well as gases, odors, and airborne chemicals (all of which can be detrimental to your bird’s good health) at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html

Your Cockatoo’s Air Purifier

If you own a Cockatoo Parrot, you have a stunningly beautiful bird—one of nature’s most amazing creations. You also have a ton of white powder because they are known as powder down birds.

This dust is what helps keep the feathers healthy and beautiful, and yet it can make life pretty tedious for their owners.

First the dust is relentless. And if you’re not careful, not only does it cover all the surfaces in the room, but it makes the air thick.

This is bad for your pet because their air passages are so easily clogged. And restricted airways often allow infection and disease to gain control.

Because birds instinctively hide signs of illness to avoid being attacked in the wild, by the time you’re aware that your Cockatoo is ill; it is often too late to reverse the condition. So eliminating the powder can add years to your companion’s life.

This white powdery dust is not good for humans to inhale on a regular basis either. It is a potent allergen that can often cause allergies and asthma to flare, and can trigger respiratory conditions in those who formerly had none.

Continually removing airborne bird dust as well as other normal household particles will greatly improve the health of your bird and you.

Filtering Cockatoo Dust Effectively

Cockatoos are gorgeous birds, not only in looks but in the intelligence and companionship they offer. What is not so much fun is the white, powdery wing dust they produce.

This is a normal part of the Cockatoo’s growth and development, but it can sure make it hard to keep your space clean.

The wing dust is in addition to the dander that all warm-blooded birds and animals produce. These fine particulates can stay suspended in the air for quite a while which makes them hazardous to your bird’s health as well as yours.

Birds’ air passages are tiny and as such are easily clogged. Once clogged, this can cause the onset of disease and infection. Since birds instinctively hide illness, once they exhibit symptoms it is often too late to reverse the disease. Restricted air passages often cause the early demise of many birds.

As for humans, this dust and dander can trigger allergy and asthma attacks in those who already have respiratory problems. And constant exposure to so much of it can precipitate respiratory problems for those who were previously healthy.

These airborne particles can become carriers for small pieces of fecal material as well as bacteria and viruses. This is not healthy air for anyone!

PurerAir.com offers a Bird Dust Air Purifier that is specifically designed to remove the huge number of particulates that Cockatoos generate. See it now at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html

Cockatoo Dust Air Purifier

Cockatoos are incredibly beautiful birds. But they are powder down birds, as you have probably learned, and they shed an incredible amount of white wing dust. This is a natural part of their growth and development and will continue all the years you have your bird.

So how should you deal with the dust? Cleaning daily will help minimize the amount of dust in the room. Damp mopping and dusting, and vacuuming will clear away the huge number of particles and prevent them from going airborne.

It’s really important to keep these particles out of the air for you and your bird’s sake. Your feathered friend’s air passages need to stay clear. And because they are so tiny, being forced to breathe air that is clogged with dust, dander, and other more normal household pollutants will eventually cause a narrowing of the airways.

The air passages are then more subject to disease and infection. And often the conditions that result are hard if not impossible to reverse.

In the case of humans, continually breathing air that is thick with bird dander and dust can cause the onset of allergies and asthma. And for those who already have sensitivity to the protein the dust and dander, it can make it impossible to live with the bird.

In addition to cleaning surfaces, constantly filtering the air is a must. This should be done with a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter 24 hours a day. This insures that you and your bird have fresh clean air, and increases the chances that your bird (and you too) will live a long healthy life together.

Managing Pet Bird Dust

All birds are not created equal when it comes to bird dust. It is natural for all birds to produce and shed microscopic dander (dead skin flakes), dust and feathers.

And these by-products of owning a bird will continue as a natural part of growth and development for as long as your bird is alive.

But there are some birds that produce a wing dust that helps their wings stay healthy. This is great for the bird but can wreak havoc with air quality and overall cleanliness of the bird’s room and your home.

Cockatoos, African Greys, Cockatiels, and Amazons are all powder down birds, and special care needs to be taken to manage the additional dust they produce.

The best way to effectively reduce the dust is to constantly filter the air. The best type of filtration for particles is HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filtration. This type of technology is used in hospitals to keep the air clean, and is able to remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 airborne particles that are .3 microns or larger.

Using this type of filter will effectively reduce the dust and dander and give you a greater chance of keeping your bird’s air passages clear. Cleaning the air will certainly improve quality of life, and add years to your bird’s life (and yours)!

PurerAir.com offers the Bird Dust Air Purifier that is used by professional aviaries such as the Joshua Rescue Foundation and the aviary at Theater of The Sea in Islamorada, Florida.

If it works for them, it will surely work for you. See it now at http://purerair.com/bird_dust_air_purifier.html

Removing Airborne Cockatoo Dust

Cockatoos are gorgeous birds. But in captivity, the powdery dust they produce is a threat to their health and the health of the humans who love and care for them. This feather dust keeps their wings soft and they will continue to produce it all their lives.

In the wild this is less of a problem because it dissipates into the atmosphere or the bird flies away. Either way they are not forced to breathe air that has high levels of the dust for very long.

Living in homes, regardless of how beautiful, can mean a different story for your beautiful bird. Most homes are well insulated from the outdoor heat and cold and there is little chance for air to be exchanged. This means the dust from your Cockatoo is circulated again and again causing pollutant levels to continue to rise.

Filtering the air constantly is the only way to insure that the pollutants are removed and the air stays fresh and healthy. HEPA (short for high efficiency particle arresting) filters by definition are designed to remove particulates as small as .3 microns.

This type of filter will trap the dust from your Cockatoo as well as other particulates that are normally found in homes—household dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, and seasonal pollens.

Cockatoo Dust Air Purifier

Cockatoos are stunningly beautiful birds. What is also equally as stunning is the amount of dust they produce. This dust can be a source of poor health for both you and your bird in addition to creating the need for constant clean up.

Unless you continually filter the air, their dust becomes thick in the air. This causes their air passages to become clogged, and because their airways are so small this can happen very quickly. Clogged air passages open the door to disease and infections that often go undetected until it is too late to save your bird.

Humans may experience coughing, sneezing, runny eyes and nose, and sometimes difficulty breathing once the dust level exceeds a certain point. This dust also serves as a carrier for airborne bacteria and viruses that can affect both birds and humans.

You can filter this dust effectively with an air purifier specifically designed to remove fine particulates from the air. And when you have a powder down bird like a Cockatoo you’re dealing with the dust that is very visible and with the microscopic dander that is invisible to the human eye.

PurerAir.com continues to supply the Joshua Rescue Foundation (for birds) with the Bird Dust Air Purifier, and it can help clear the air of bird dust and dander for you as well.

Pet Cockatoo Care

One of the best ways to take good care of your Cockatoo beyond food and water is to provide clean, filtered air in the bird room. Keeping the air free of their wing dust, dander and other normal household pollutants will greatly reduce their chance of developing disease and infection.

Breathing clean air will also keep your Cockatoo’s air passages clear. And the caretaker at the Theater of the Sea Aviary in Islamorada, Florida feels that filtered air provided by the air purifiers from PurerAir.com is what has helped their parrots live way past the ripe old age of 60!

In addition, some of the diseases that Cockatoos are susceptible to can also be hazards to human health. So cleaning the air constantly just makes sense for everyone in the house.

When caring for a Cockatoo, you are probably already aware that not only are you dealing with dander, but that white powdery dust from their wings. Let the filter absorb the dust rather than your lungs or those of your bird.
