Austin Air Replacement Filters---Top 3 Questions Answered

Austin Air replacements lasts so long that it’s easy to misplace the information about the filters by the time you’re ready for a new filter. Here are answers to the 3 most frequent questions that we are often asked here at PurerAir.com

1. How can I tell if the filter needs replacing?

Your nose knows when the filter is at the end of its life. A carbon filter that is full will put out a sweet odor. And even if it doesn’t, anytime the air smells anything but fresh, and clean when your purifier is running is an indication that your filter is full.

2. Can I replace the filter with a different filter than the original one?

If your purifier is a standard size and was made after 1995, then your case is big enough to hold any of the newer replacement filters including the Pet Machine and the Bedroom Machine filters.

The same is true for junior size purifiers. If it was made after 1995, you can replace your filter with any junior size filter.

However, if your filter was made before 1995 (and there are plenty of them out there that still work), the case is only big enough for the HEGA or Allergy Machine replacement filter.

3. What difference does the light or dark-colored filter make?

This color choice is totally aesthetic. For purifiers that are white or sandstone, a light-colored pre-filter makes the unit look more cohesive through the tiny holes on the bottom two thirds of the unit. And if your purifier is Black or Silver, the dark-colored pre-filter looks better. They both work the same way.

Austin Air Replacement Filters from PurerAir.com

Here at PurerAir.com we are often asked about the differences between Austin Air filters, and the uses for which they are intended. Here is a brief description of the filter make-up of the 5 filters Austin Air offers, and the best uses of each. The following descriptions apply to both the standard and junior size filters.

All of the filters contain a large and medium particle pre-filter for removing particles you can see; a HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter for eliminating particles down to .3 microns in size. It is the 4th and 5th filter that will be described below.

HEGA Filter—-Contains a 4th filter of military carbon cloth. This gives an extra level of particulate removal, and its carbon composition makes it excellent for removing gases and odors.

HealthMate---The 4th filter contains carbon zeolite. This makes it an excellent all-purpose filter that is effective at chemical, odor, and gas elimination.

HealthMate Plus—-The 4th filter contains carbon zeolite “plus” potassium iodide. This makes it effective at removing airborne chemicals.

Pet Machine---The 4th filter contains carbon zeolite with ammonasorb. It is best at removing pet urine odor.

Bedroom Machine Air Purifier---This is a combination of the HealthMate and the HEGA filters. The 4th filter is carbon zeolite as in the HealthMate, and the additional 5th filter is carbon cloth that is found in the HEGA series. Endorsed by the National Sleep Foundation, it is the newest addition to filter series.

Replacing Austin Air Filters---3 Easy Steps

Austin Air Purifiers are so low maintenance that you don’t need to change the filters for 5 years or longer. So it’s easy to forget how to do it. The good news is that in 3 easy steps you can get the old filter out, the new filter in, and be set for another 5 years. Here’s how.

1. Unplug the unit and turn it up side down. Unscrew the 4 screws that hold the bottom plate in place. Remove the bottom plate.

2. Pull out the canister that contains the 4 filters. The pre-filter may stay in when you do this. But it’s easy to just pull this cotton like filter out after the canister has been removed.

3. Put in the new canister which contains all 4 (or 5 if you are putting in the Bedroom Machine Replacement). Replace the 4 screws that secure the bottom plate to the unit. Turn the unit upright, and run on high for one hour. Cut it back to the speed that has been working best for you, and your Austin Air Purifier will work 24/7 for another 5 years.

Replacement Austin Air Filters

Replacing the filter in your Austin Air purifier is an opportunity to update and fine tune your filtration needs. There are numerous options and filter make-ups which give you the best chance for eliminating the specific pollutants that are giving you problems. Here are the 5 filter choices from Austin Air.

Carbon Zeolite (HealthMate)
—This is found in the HealthMate series. It is best at removing general pollutants and serves well as an all around filter.

Carbon Zeolite with Potassium Iodide (HealthMate Plus)
—This combination is found in the HealthMate Plus series. Designed to remove airborne volatile organic chemicals such as formaldehyde and other chemicals that off gas from new carpet, pressed wood furniture, and products used in nail and beauty salons this combination is highly effective.

Carbon Zeolite with Ammonasorb (Pet Machine)—This combination makes this a wonderful filter for eliminating pet urine odor both in homes and in professional kennels.

Carbon Cloth (Allergy Machine) ---This is found in the HEGA series more commonly known as the Allergy Machine and the JR Allergy Machine or the HealthMate JR HEGA. This filter gives an extra layer of protection against airborne particulates that typically trigger allergy and asthma flare-ups.

Carbon Zeolite and Carbon Cloth (Bedroom Machine)
---This combination of filters is only found in the Bedroom Machine Air Purifier. Choosing the Bedroom filter means that you get both the carbon for odors and gases and the carbon cloth for particulates.

The good news is that if your purifier was manufactured after 1995, you can replace any standard filter with a standard filter, and any junior filter with a junior filter. This allows you to put the latest technology to work for you without having to purchase a new purifier.

Austin Air Replacement Filter Tips

If you already own an Austin Air Purifier and are ready to replace your filter, here are 3 tips to remember.

1. If your unit was made after 1995, any standard filter being made today will fit in any standard unit made after 1995; and the same is true for the junior size units.

This means you can replace your HM400 filter with a Pet Machine filter or even the newest filter in the Austin Air line—the Bedroom Machine replacement filter

2. Light and dark color choices for filters refer to the pre-filter color. So if you have a White or Sandstone purifier choose the light-colored replacement. If you have the Silver or Black Purifier choose the dark-colored replacement.

3. To replace the filter unscrew the 4 screws on the bottom, pull out the canister, replace with new canister and tighten the 4 screws. Run on high for an hour and you’re set for another 5 years.

Austin Air Replacement Filter Tips

Because the need to replace the filter in an Austin Air Purifier usually happens so infrequently, it’s easy to forget how to do it. Here are answers to the top 3 most frequently asked questions.

The procedure is super easy, and knowing the answers to these questions will make the replacement procedure a no-brainer.

How do I get the purifier open?

There are 4 screws on the bottom of both the standard and junior size purifiers. Turn the purifier off, unplug it, and turn it upside down on a rug, carpet, or towel. Unscrewing these screws allows you to take the entire bottom plate off the unit, exposes the used filter, and allows you to insert the new one.

Does the new replacement filter come with a pre-filter?

Yes, so be sure to remove the old pre-filter. All of the filters come in a canister, and the new pre-filter will be the outer most filter that should go closest to the steel purifier casing.

Are there any special instructions to follow after the new filter is in?

Yes, we recommend that you run it on high for an hour and then turn it to the speed that seems to work best for your situation.

If you have questions or need more information, please call PurerAir.com now at (800) 997-2989, we’ll be glad to help with any aspect of replacing your filter! You can also find more Austin Air replacement filter tips online at http://purerair.com/austin_air_replacement_filter_tips.html

Austin Air Replacement Filters

If you’re approaching filter replacement time for your Austin Air Purifier here are some useful tips that will make ordering and replacing your filter a snap.

1. The replacement comes as a canister and contains all 4 filters including the pre-filter.

2. You can access the filter by unplugging the unit, turning it upside down, and removing the 4 screws on the bottom.

3. When ordering, make sure that you specify light or dark. The color refers to the pre-filter and the unit will look more uniform if you order light for White and Sandstone purifiers, and dark for Silver and Black units.

However, when Theater of the Sea orders replacements for their units they get the dark colored pre-filters for the sandstone units so they can see when the filter are dirty. It's totally a matter of preference!

4. Pre-filters can be purchased separately for both the junior and standard size units for a minimum amount ($25-$35) and changing them yearly can help prolong the life of the inner filters.

5. After changing the filter, run your unit on high for an hour and then turn it to the speed that you find works best for you.

Changing your filter at the regularly scheduled time keeps the air in your home fresh and clean, and as a result has been proven to be an effective management tool for allergies, asthma, hay fever and other acute and chronic respiratory issues.

Austin Air Replacement Tips

If you already own an Austin Air Purifier you know that the filters last for an incredible 5 years—and sometimes even longer! So when it comes times to replace your filter use these 5 tips to make it a seamless transition.

1. Light-colored and dark-colored color options refer to the color of the pre-filter which is the first filter that pollutants come in contact with inside the purifier. If your cleaner is White or Sandstone choose the light color. If your cleaner is Black or Silver choose the dark color. Choosing a pre-filter whose color is similar to the purifier helps your unit look more uniform as you will be able to see it through the perforations on all sides of the cleaner.

2. You can open the unit by unscrewing the 4 screws located on the bottom of the unit. Be sure to unplug it first and place the top of the unit on something soft to prevent scratching the powder coat finish on the top of the unit.

3. Record the serial number of the filter (usually begins with F) before you put the replacement in the unit. You’ll need this number to register your filter. Registering your filter as soon as you purchase it makes it easier for you to take advantage for the 5 year prorated filter warranty should the need arise.

4. Be sure to check the date your purifier was made. A standard size unit made after 1995 can accept any standard size filter, and the same applies for junior size units made after 1995.

5. There are several new filters available since 1995. They include a Pet Machine Filter that effectively removes urine odor, and a Bedroom Machine Filter endorsed by the National Sleep Foundation to remove airborne pollutants that often interfere with getting a good night’s sleep.

Austin Air HEGA or HealthMate? ---That Is the Question

If you have an Austin Air purifier that was made after 1995, you are one of the lucky people who have the wonderful option of interchanging your filter.

And so the question often arises—which replacement filter is better—the HEGA or the HealthMate? The answer is that they are different. Let’s explore their similarities and differences.

Both filters have a medical grade HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter. This means that both will remove airborne particulates as small as .3 microns including dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, pet dander, as well as bacteria and viruses.

Both have large and medium particle pre-filters that are important in prolonging the life of the inner filter.

The difference between the two filters lies in the inner filter. The HealthMate contains carbon zeolite—6.5 pounds in the junior size unit, and 15 pounds in the standard size unit. The carbon zeolite has proven to be excellent at removing odors, gases, and some airborne chemicals making it great for all purpose filtration.

The HEGA (or high efficiency gas adsorption) contains military carbon cloth which is best at removing smoke and the fine particulates that are a by-product of combustion whether from a cigarette, a wood burning stove, or a wildfire. It is also super efficient at removing gases and odors—superior in this aspect to the HealthMate.

If you are at all sensitive to carbon, the HEGA filter is a better choice because it contains less carbon. This also makes the filter lighter in weight if that needs to be a consideration in your decision.

Successfully filtering your air depends on matching your filter with the airborne pollutants you need to remove from your air. Austin Air Replacement Filters—Where to Find Serial Numbers for Austin Air Replacement Filters

Yesterday a customer asked, Do Austin Air Replacement Filters have serial numbers, if so where are they? What a great question. Here is the answer.

If you have a new (as in just purchased it) Austin Air replacement filter and you want to register it for the warranty, the serial number can usually be found on a sticker that has been stuck to the metal part of the top of the filter. This serial number usually begins with the letter “F”.

If you have an older replacement filter, and you need to find the serial number, it is usually written on the inner center metal part of the filter.

Austin Air HEPA Filter Replacements and How To Interchange Them

All standard size Austin Air purifiers made after August of 1995 have the capacity to accept any other standard size replacement filter. What does this mean to you? If you bought an Allergy Machine because of asthma or allergy, and have now developed chemical sensitivities as well, you can replace the Allergy Machine filter, with the HealthMate Plus replacement filter. Or if you originally purchased a HealthMate Plus purifier for chemical sensitivities, and are no longer experiencing those symptoms, but still want to keep dust and dander down, you can replace the HealthMate Plus replacement filter with an Austin Air HealthMate replacement filter.

The same kinds of filter substitutions can be made among the Austin Air junior size purifiers. The HealthMate Plus JR replacement filter will upgrade the HealthMate JR purifier. The Allergy Machine replacement filter can target smoke and odors by replacing the original carbon zeolite filter that came in the HealthMate JR purifier.

It is normal for your body to react differently to pollutants over time. Some people are fortunate to have their allergy, asthma, or chemical sensitivity symptoms decrease. Some people might experience a lessening of one sensitivity, and an increase in another. If this happens to you, isn’t it nice to know your Austin Air HEPA air purifier can make the change with you?

If you have questions about what is possible with your Austin Air purifiers and replacement filters, call Purer Air now at (800) 997-2989, or email us at customersupport@PurerAir.com. Our 24 hour customer support is open and ready to answer your questions or place your order.

How Can I Tell If My Austin Air Filter Needs Changing?

Tis the season to close the windows! And with the change in weather and the closing of windows often comes a decline in indoor air quality in your home or office. Looking at the filter will not tell you if it needs changing. So here are 3 ways to tell if your Austin Air filter needs replacing?

1. If you smell a sour pungent vinegar odor, or any odor when it runs, this usually means the filter is full and you need to replace it.

2. If you notice reduced air flow to your purifier you need a replacement filter.

3. If you've been using your filter for longer than 5 years and air quality is poor-- i.e. you can see particles in your air when a lamp is on, or when the sunlight is streaming into your room; you should invest in a new filter. As the saying goes "If you can't breathe, nothing else matters".

If you own an older model purifier, and you're not sure which replacement filter you need, call us at (800) 997-2989 with the serial number from the back or the bottom of your purifier, and we'll make sure you get the correct filter for your purifier.

Austin Air Hepa Air Filter Replacement--Choosing A Color!

When you're ready to order your Austin Air replacement filter from PurerAir.com, you'll notice a drop-down menu that gives a choice of colors for the filter--light-colored, and dark-colored. If you're like me you'll think, "Why do they offer a choice of color for something that won't show, and why should I care?"

Well, the truth of the matter is that the color choice is for the prefilter which is the soft material inside the purifier that is between the outer wall of the purifier and the actual filter. Because your Austin Air purifier has small holes on all 4 sides under the control panel, you will, in fact, be able to see the color of the prefilter.

So if you have a sandstone, white, or silver purifier, be sure to order the light-colored prefilter. If you have a black purifier, be sure to order the dark-colored prefilter. The Baby's Breath purifier comes in pink and blue, but the prefilter only comes in white.

So when we suggest that you vacuum the outside of the purifier to remove the large particles such as dust, dog hair, etc., you will be using your vacuum to pull these particles through the small holes of your purifier and away from the prefilter--a prefilter that will blend very nicely when you choose the correct color. Hope this sheds some light on the situation!

Call Purer Air at 800-997-2989, or Send E-mail to Customer Support for answers to other questions you may have.
