Preventing the Flu

There were easily 100 parents with their children at the pediatrician’s office today as my daughter and I went to get her annual flu shot. This was our doctor’s first offering of the vaccine this year, and it was pretty clear that parents have a heightened concern about getting the shot this year.

As we waited for our turn, parents exchanged information about schools and the anxiety that several cases of swine flu in a nearby elementary school were causing. And whether you opt for the mist or the shot, the vaccine is a crucial way to give your child a better chance of staying healthy.

With so many people so close together, it was still hard to avoid sneezing and coughing from children who were there because they were sick. And whereas the shot helps you fight germs that have been ingested or inhaled, it doesn’t lessen the number of airborne germs to which you and your family are exposed.

But a medical grade HEPA air purifier is designed to eliminate bacteria and viruses from the air as small as .3 microns with 99.97% efficiency. Using an air cleaner that can remove the bacteria and viruses from the air before they have a chance to invade the body gives an increased level of protection not only during the flu season, but all during the year.

And because a high efficiency particle arresting (often shortened to HEPA) air purifier will also remove airborne pollutants such as dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, and pet dander, it also offers relief for those who suffer with chronic respiratory conditions such as asthma and allergies.

PurerAir.com offers the HealthMate Air Purifier that is designed to constantly work at keeping the air clean and healthy.

Reducing Airborne Bacteria and Viruses

One of the most frequent ways that bacteria and viruses spread from one person to another is by being inhaled or ingested directly from the air when someone sneezes, or coughs. They can and often do attach to particles in the air with the same results—being inhaled or ingested by the new host.

In order to effectively fight off these germs and minimize your chances of colds and flu catching you this flu season, the indoor air quite literally needs to be cleared continually.

Opening windows and doors can circulate air. And fans can do the same. But as cold weather approaches and we start to spend money to heat the air to a comfortable temperature, we will surely become less willing to throw money away by opening windows and doors and letting the heat out.

The best way to effectively, efficiently, and economically reduce airborne bacteria and viruses is by using a medical grade high efficiency particle arresting (or HEPA) air purifier to filter your air.

Designed to remove particles as small as .3 microns with 99.97% efficiency, a HEPA can take out household dust, mold and mildew spores, pet dander and any other particulates to which airborne contagions can attach.

PurerAir.com offers an air purifier that has proven to be an excellent partner for good health time and time again.

Flee the Flu--3 Easy Steps

Now that the windows and doors are shut, the hatches are battened down against the snow and wintry weather; we have created the perfect breeding ground for the flu virus. Here are 3 easy things you can do to make sure you and your family “flee the flu” and stay healthy this flu season. Like so many things in life, consistency is the key.

1. Wash your hands when going from one environment to another.

Be sure to use soap and wash with bubbles for at least 30 seconds. Hand washing is not only important when you return home from shopping, school, or the office, but is just as important when you go into another environment such as your office, boardroom, school, or preschool. Make hand washing the first thing you do when you arrive. This prevents you from bringing germs into your new environment.

2. When sneezing or coughing cover your mouth with your arm rather than your hands.
This not only keeps a large portion of the germs from becoming airborne, but prevents you from spreading the germs when touching door knobs, computer keyboards, coffee pots, pencils, kitchen utensils, and hundreds of other items. Share hand washing and arm covering tips with your children, or grandchildren. Make a game out of hand washing. See who can get the most bubbles out of their soap. Invest in some of the liquid soaps that come in all colors. Hand washing will become a cool thing to do rather than a chore. Practice covering sneezes and coughs with arms when they are well. Praise them when they do it! Soon it will become a habit for them, and they’ll be proud to remind you when you forget.

3. Use the Austin Air HealthMate HM400 (for large spaces), or the HM200 HEPA air purifier (for smaller spaces) to remove the airborne flu-causing viruses and bacteria (down to .3 microns). A HEPA air purifier in your child’s classroom at school or preschool is another option. The Austin Air purifier is designed to run 24 hours, quietly cleaning the air, and at the end of each school year, the purifier could move with your child to the next teacher’s room to assure the cleanest, most germ free classroom in the school. Teachers will love to see your child’s name on their roll. An air purifier for the faculty lounge would also be a big hit, and would help keep teachers healthy, reduce absences, and increase productivity as well.

During this time when there is great concern about overuse of antibiotics, these are 3 simple, time-proven, greener changes in your lifestyle that can make a huge difference. Take good care, and stay well.
