Is Bird Dander Harmful?

In a word, yes, bird dander is harmful. These microscopic flakes of dead skin are constantly being shed as it is replaced by newer, healthier skin.

This process is a natural part of your bird’s growth and development and will continue for as long as you have your bird.

For birds in captivity it is harmful if large concentrations remain in the air and force your bird to constantly inhale these particles.

Because their air passages are so small, they are easily clogged. And it doesn’t take long for these flakes to attach and constrict their airways.

Clogged air passages are often the start of disease and infection. And because they instinctively hide illness, it is often too late to save them once they start to show signs that something is wrong.

For humans, the effects of dander are not much brighter. The protein in bird dander is a fierce allergen. Inhaling air that has heavy concentrations for even a small period of time can cause sneezing, congestion, watery eyes, and even a feeling of not being able to breathe.

Filtering the air is the only way to keep air quality healthy for the bird and its people. The cleaner needs to be one that can run 24 hours and has filters that can deal with the not only the additional bird-related particles and odors, but normal household pollutants as well.
