Austin Air Air Filters—What Are They Good For?

We at PurerAir.com often get customers calling in with indoor air quality issues and want to know which filter is best for their situation.

The following tips are designed to help you choose the filter that will give you 24 hour protection and eliminate the pollutants that are giving you problems.

Each Austin Air purifier has 4 filters. The first 3 in each unit are always the same--a large particle prefilter, a medium particle prefilter and the HEPA or high efficiency particle arresting filter. It is the fourth filter that hones in on more specific contaminants.

HealthMate—Both the standard and junior purifiers contain carbon zeolite. This filter is a good multi-purpose filter that will absorb some odors and some chemicals.

Allergy Machine—Both the standard and junior purifiers lack the carbon of the HealthMate series, but contain carbon cloth which is excellent at removing additional particulates such as triggers that exacerbate allergies—pollen, dust, dust mites, mold and mildew spores, bird dust and dander.

HealthMate Plus—Both the standard and junior purifiers contain carbon and have potassium iodide as an additive. These purifiers are best used for removal of paint smells, formaldehyde, varnish, adhesives, beauty and nail salon products, and diesel and gasoline fumes.

Pet Machine—This purifier only comes in the standard size and contains carbon with an ammonasorb additive. This is best if urine odor is a problem and is effective enough to be used commercially in kennels, cat sanctuaries, doggie daycares and other places where a large number of pets are housed.

Bedroom Machine—This purifier contains 5 filters. It is a combination of the HealthMate and the Allergy Machine in that it contains both carbon (15 lbs) and carbon cloth. This makes it especially good at both particulates and odors and chemicals.
