Managing Cockatiel Dust
And if you own a Cockatiel you know that the dust isn’t a joke.
They are wonderful little birds with huge personalities that create a ton of white, powdery dust.
Looking at the big picture this white dust is a natural and
ongoing part of their growth and development.
You will always need to manage it for as long as you have your pet. But if you’re reading this, you know that
it’s easier said than done.
Cleaning with water, furnishing your room with furniture
that allows dust to fall to the floor easily, and regular cleaning are all
great ways to manage the dust. But
regardless of how much or how well you do these things, dust will still go
airborne.
Once airborne, this dust is a hazard to the respiratory
system of both you and your bird. Your
bird has tiny air passages that clog easily.
And clogged air passages in our feathered friends often lead to disease
and infection that are not usually able to be reversed. This single factor is the cause of far too
many deaths that didn’t have to happen.
In people, this dust can exacerbate existing respiratory
conditions such as asthma and allergies.
Constant inhalation of high levels of this dust can cause the onset of
conditions not previously a problem.
Continuous filtering of the air is the only way to reliably
keep the dust and dander low without putting your bird at risk by opening
windows that can introduce other pollutants, change the temperature, cause
drafts, and in some cases even allow it to escape.
Not just any filter will consistently and effectively reduce
the particulates in the air. If you want
efficiency then only a high efficiency particle arresting (HEPA) filter will
do.
In order to hold this designation it
must be able to remove 99,997 out of every 10,000 particles that are .3 microns
or greater. So it can easily remove bird dust, dander, and other
microscopic particles from the air.
