Prefilters for Austin Air HEPA Air Purifiers—What Are They, When and How to Change Them

The Austin Air HEPA prefilter is located inside the purifier between the HEPA filter and the outside of the purifier. It is designed to trap big particles such as hair, dust, and lint. Austin Air recommends keeping the prefilter clean by vacuuming the outside of your purifier several times a month. This facilitates better air flow into the purifier which means your purifier will operate more efficiently.

One of the ways to prolong the life of the Austin HEPA filter is by keeping the prefilter clean, and when the prefilter becomes clogged beyond cleaning, order a new prefilter for your purifier.

The prefilter comes in both a standard and junior size, and in a light or dark color. If you own a black purifier, order the dark-colored prefilter. If you own a sandstone, white, or silver purifier order the light-colored prefilter.

Changing the prefilter means removing the filter from the purifier by unscrewing the bottom plate, unwrapping the old prefilter from around the HEPA filter, and replacing it with the new prefilter, and sliding both back into the purifier, and reattaching the bottom plate of the purifier. The entire process should take about 10 minutes.
